July ABC 2014 Irish Newspaper Circualtion

Most of the morning tabloids had a bit of a mini-rally with The Sun and The Mirror gaining month on month.  However the Daily Star didn’t figure in the ‘surge’ dropping 150 copies and its first place spot among the redtops as well. The Daily Mail reports a drop of over 6,000 on the month (-13%) which is a fairly sizeable decrease in a calendar month but much of that could be down to a reduction in their Multiple Copy Sales figure which dropped by over 3,000 month on month. The rest of the mornings are minimal in terms of

Irish Newspaper Circulation June 2014

This month sees The Sun and The Daily Star dip below the sixty marks and the Mirror roots itself solidly into the forties. I’ve never made any bones about it – but I’m a huge fan of tabloids, but by no means a tabloid apologist when they over step the mark – as they have on numerous occasions. The dip this month is particularly worrying for that group of papers. I appreciate dropping below sixty is purely psychological, but it has the ability to affect people within a struggling news brand. Selling a publication with a circulation of (say) 61,000

ABC Irish Newspaper Circulation May 2014

Nothing spectacular happened in May – the end of the premier league and the beginning of the Football and Hurling championship (and therefore order being resorted to the world!). The ABC’s were equally less than spectacular and continued along the same lines as normal. The Daily Mirror stepped into dangerous territory, dropping below the 50k mark. It had dipped there before in December, but that’s allowed given the season etc.The Daily Star managed to keep ahead of The Sun by a slim 82 copies, dropping 900 copies in the month and the latter picking up 300. The Sunday tabloids as

UK NRS Readership Data 2014

The NRS readership data was released today and it shows definite patterns emerging in UK readership data. The research covers April 13 to March 14 and combines the traditional face-to-face research to determine the ‘print’ element and comscore data to determine the web portion of the research. The first item you’ll notice is the proliferation of minuses in the Print +/- column showing the decline in print readership in the past twelve months with the Guardian group falling the most. The rest of the qualities managed to save some face – but only relative to the Guardian fall. The readership

Facebook Publication Statistics

Tracking the social media element of news publications yields some interesting results. Looking at the infamous Facebook likes and fans shows that the papers are making an effort on that front recruiting fans on a daily basis. Tracking this back to June of last year you can see that the Irish Times had the jump on the Independent, but the latter hunted them down over the year and is now only just over 10,000 behind. Both papers are adding fans at about 20% per month in the recent past. * What’s really interesting is the approach adopted by each publication

April 2014 Irish Newspaper ABC Circualtion

April was a very busy month with a few big sporting events and Easter and all that it brings. Easter is not the kindest for newspapers with the daily papers opting to exclude the 18th and 21st (Good Friday and Easter Monday) from their month’s total and the Sundays opting to exclude the 20th. The tabloids would have been helped with Aintree and, to a lesser extent, the National League Final. The Daily Star added 1,700 and the Mirror 400 odd, The Sun on the other hand dropped 131 copies – all on the previous month. In fact the tabloids

March 2014 ABC Circulation

March brings a bit of good news for the tabloids in the form of Cheltenham, which always manages to lift sales for them. However going on the past, this boost will be short-lived and April will bring a dose of reality to a beleaguered market. The big winner this month was the Daily Star gaining close to 2,000 copies and it looks like it was at the expense of the Daily Mirror, who had a fairly disastrous Cheltenham month falling nearly 1,000 on February. The Daily Mail is obviously not a “punters paper” and never really held itself out as

Irish Newspaper Circulations February 2014

The lift the papers got in January is well gone now and some of the publications dripped significantly. The Mirror dropped 2,900 copies (-5% on the month) leaving it at just over 51,000. The Irish Daily Star now at 61,000 whilst The Sun is down to 60,000 – down 7% on the year, The Star down 9%. The Morning are down 18,000 year on year and 8,000 on the month.    In the Sundays, the News of the World went against the trend and added over 1,000 month on month. The decision to continue trying to flog the People in

UK Readership – NRS Jan-Dec 2013NRS

It’s infinitely easier to amalgamate some of the data that’s appeared of late in one block. They all have a close association to each other, all hail from the UK and therefore it’s as well to marshal them all together. The data relates to the latest quarter of the NRS readership survey and the recent eABC certificates for the UK nationals. The readership survey appeared on Wednesday and it shows what everybody knows that print is in decline and web was on the up. The print research side is a face to face interview and the web portion comes from

2013 JNRS Newspaper Readership

With all the data we received yesterday, we nearly overlooked the readership data via the JNRS. It’s unfortunate (or otherwise) that they use the release date for the Island of Ireland report to also release the findings of the readership survey.  The survey is conducted face to face with 7,000 adults annually and questions them on their newspaper reading habits, both the physical product and online. It’s counterpart in the UK (NRS) takes a slightly different approach to the digital element in that they use comScore data to assess the online numbers. The survey showed that just over 3m people

ABC Sunday Newspaper Circulation July December 2013

The Sunday Market, like the morning, dropped 6% year on year, down 54,000 to 811,000. Unlike the morning market where there was a somewhat consistency to the declines the papers in the Sunday Market had very mixed fortunes. If falling circulation still manages to get you the title of ‘best performer’, then the Sunday Independent deserves that accolade. It only dropped 3% year on year and all other titles in the market declined by greater percentages. I’m of the opinion that the Sunday Market is a peculiar creature and some papers will fair ‘better’ than others because of this. The

ABC Morning Newspaper Circulation July December 2013

Morning Market: The first point of reference is that the morning market has fallen below 500k for the first time and, as can see from the various charts accompanying the post, there is no sign of any reversal of fortunes. The big fallers year on year are the Red Tops who collectively are down 8%. The Sun and The Daily Star slug it out for worst performers in the Morning market title, watched on closely by the Daily Mirror. In the six month average both The Sun and The Star managed to stay above 60,000, but recent fortunes in the

Irish Newspaper Circulation January 2014

January, thankfully, showed a change in the outlooks of the tabloids, most notably the Daily Mirror bouncing back some 7,000 copies on its December figure and the Sun followed suit gaining nearly 3,000. Still the year on year figure is bleak down between 5% and 9% – the latter percent being the Irish Daily Star. All the papers got a lift for the New Year bar the Observer – which it should be noted is one of the most expensive papers in the Irish Market weighing in at €3.00 – the same as the FT.  The Sunday Mirror is down

Saturday lift for the Tabloids

Just a small bit of information regarding the differences between the Monday to Friday Sales and a Saturday sale for the various papers. The ABC will break out the Saturday and non Saturday sale. Even if the Guardian and Telegraph are coming from a low base, the lift is still fairly impressive and would indicate that there is a good demand for a quality UK based paper at the weekend and all that it offers in terms of extra supplements. The big number increases go to the three tabloids with The Sun being the main beneficiary, increasing its circulation by

ABC E Numbers December 2013

Interesting numbers from the ABC, but this time it’s their ‘e’ numbers. Ever since The Sun went behind the paywall, with moderate success, we’ve kept an eye on web traffic for The Mirror to see how it fairs without that competition. They’ve had a decent month breaking through the 2m mark, but still a good bit to go catching up with the Guardian and The Mail. But there was some buried information in the ABC release. For the first time it published the numbers for they Mirror’s ‘tablet edition’ – a replica of its print edition, but it’s not an

ABC Circulation December 2013

December is always a bad month for sales and this year is no different. The tabloids took a beating last month dropping 10,000 over the month. The big faller was The Mirror leaving 5,600 behind on November. The Sun fell into the 50’s pit for the first time and The Daily Star hung on by a very narrow 400 copies. With the inclement weather we had last month, I can’t expect that these figures will rebound as much as they have historically in January. In the Sunday market the Sun lost over 3000 on the month with the rest of

The Sun’s numbers behind the paywall

Very interesting numbers from News UK last week – publishers of the Sunday Times and The Sun etc. After a few months behind a paywall it has revealed that the Sun has currently 117,000 subscribers to its digital offering Sun+. Their last audited figure before they went behind the wall was 1.8m for July 2013 which equates to a 6.5% conversion to digital. It wouldn’t be the strongest figure in the world but there is an upside in that the 117,000 as it will add £12m to the turnover of the paper. In the same press release it revealed that

independent.ie Website audit October 2013

It slipped into the ABC email, hoping to remain unnoticed perhaps. But along with the monthly ABC’s was the website audit for independent.ie for August 2013. Unfortunately this audit is not directly comparable to their previous audit as the sites under scrutiny are different. This audit covers independent.ie only whereas the previous one for March 2012 covers all of it products (grabone.ie, findajob.ie, globrix.ie etc). The results are below and show that, on average, just short of a quarter of a million people visit the website every day and 4m people visit the site every month. Using the daily average
