Irish Sunday Newspaper ABC Circulations, Jan-June 2012

Outside the headline figure of a 31% drop for the Sun on Sunday compared to the News of the World, the big story would be the 14% drop in the circulation of the Sunday Business Post.  In the last twelve months it lost nearly 7,000 copies and dropped to just above 41,000. Luckily for the spin in the sales department, there are 1,400 copies (3.5%) of ‘bulks’ in that figure – but they’re not alone in fattening their figures. Next on the list is the Sunday World which is down 8% or close to 20,000 on the previous twelve months.

Irish Newspaper ABC Circulations, Jan-June 2012

The laggards in the ABC certifications finally showed their hands and, without putting too fine a point on it, many of them we holding “Aces and Eights”. The figures make for very grim reading for some publications at this poker table.  All the figures are ABC Jan – June 2012 compared to ABC Jan – June 2011. The Sundays narrowly avoided slipping the wrong side of 900k. Helped in this by some cosmetics for the ‘bulks’ but they were still down nearly 100k in the year or 9% The Mornings were down 8% or 45k, again with a bit of

JNRS 2012/11

It’s sometimes very difficult to reconcile the two public numeric’s of Newspapers; circulation data and readership data. The newspapers are very much on a downward trajectory in the circulation theatre, but the recently released JNRS data in many cases tell a very different story. In the mornings, the Independent and the Times lost 7% and 11% respectively whilst the tabloids made great strides – unlike the data in their circulation figures.  The Daily Mail made the biggest gains in the morning market. The Sunday Independent is still the biggest read paper in Ireland, followed by the Sunday World and they

Knock off

The ‘net is alive and well with plagiarism. Some people are simply too lazy to apply themselves and write their own copy. The victims of this plagiarism sometimes give up the ghost and simply take as part and parcel of being on the World Wide Web.  But there are remedies, some are straightforward and some are complicated, but all of them are worth exploring.   I’ll stick to type content at this point as the image side is a more complicated issue. Two pieces of advice I would give if you have images that you want to protect. For a

Irish Newspaper June ABC Circulation 2012

I may have been a touch hasty writing the epitaph of the Daily Star when it lost its status as “King of the Tabloids” last month. It didn’t do too much, bar stand still, and let The Sun drop 1,200 copies to let The Daily Star regain its title. The Mirror also fell back by near enough 1,000 copies so the Daily Star was the only tabloid to gain in June. It’s most likely the last ABC audit (in the Republic) for the Independent (London) and they have decided to withdraw from the Irish market.  Nothing of note in the

Smartphone daily activities

Before we look at the statistics, it’s as well to look at this locally first. A report from O2 in the UK came up with some fairly interesting numbers on the daily interaction of smartphones users and their devices. Actually, there was another article related to that suggesting the “smart” phone as a word is not redundant and that we should really replace it with “phone” – I’d also advocate that we give “Ahoy” another shot as the introductory greeting! Let’s first take a look at the smartphone landscape in Ireland, or rather the estimates. ComReg keeps a track of

Celtic Media Group and Johnston Press changes

Two different scenarios is the ever changing landscape of Local press. Celtic Media Group has been acquired but some of its management team and Johnston Press closes one of its titles and makes some editorial changes. Celtic Media Group have acquired five titles from its (one time) parent Dunfermline Press at what can only be described as a fire sale in terms of the previous selling prices of the titles. They have acquired the titles for €5.5m in total – about 11 times less than the combined purchase price of the titles over the years. Not only have they purchased

European Internet Statistics May 2012

It’s another stat attack – but the information might be useful. Comscore release their monthly internet statistics today and its interesting reading when compared to the same month last year.According to their data, where were an estimated 1.48 billion unique visitors to the internet in May, up marginally on the previous year. On average, they spent 24.5 hours on the internet in that month again up marginally on last year.In our own fair land, there were 2.4m unique visitors to the internet in May 2012 which was up substantially on the previous year, up by some 14% or an extra

May ABC Newspaper Circulation 2012

The Kings is dead, long live the King. Not since January 2009 has the Daily Star been out boxed by its rival, The Sun. But even in that figure there is a measure of ‘smoke and mirrors’. The Daily Star circulation figure historically is an amalgam of its Republic of Ireland figure and its Northern Ireland edition (the Green Top). The Sun figure is simply the Republic of Ireland figure – so arguably in this jurisdiction The Sun has been the champ for a while. Now they have bragging rights to both weight divisions and I suggest they won’t be

Letshost New Firewall Configuration!!!

Beginning on the 25th of Letshost made a few changes and, according to an email from them “upgraded the firewall as it was not working correctly” – naturally and on reflection, I’d prefer if they had simply left the firewall alone.  From that date, the servers are now blocking access to Googlebot crawlers (or more specifically their IP addresses). This means that when the bot goes to look at a web page it has stored in its index, the new Letshost firewall configuration throws the bot a complete curve ball (see below) and Google then marks this page as

Irish Newspaper Circulation April 2012

April sees the some of the tabloids take a hammering. The Daily Star lost 3,000 copies month on month, but it’s not a one off. In many of the previous years they have had a heavy drop March to April mainly due to the upsurge in the March figure due to Cheltenham. The Sun (Sunday) lost over 5,000 purchasers month on month and they didn’t show up in anyone else’s figures. In general the month was good for most publishers with ten of the twelve morning titles showing an increase and six of the Sundays making gains. But still, month

Google Penguin Change

In an interesting article yesterday in the Irish Independent, it noted how so many websites have been ‘hamstrung’ by the latest Google algorithm change, affectionately known as ‘penguin’. In this change the search engine specifically targeted websites that ‘gamed’ the engines in the past and got decent results on the back of it. The way they managed to get these inflated rankings was through a range of nefarious methods: Keyword spamming, backdoor pages, link spam – to mention but a few. The Google Webmaster Forum is now chock-a-block with website owners complaining that their sites have all but disappeared

Saturday Newspaper Sales

The most recent editions of the ACB broke out the sales of the papers available in Ireland (bar the lazy ones) on a Monday to Friday and Saturday averages. It’s quite an interesting list of figures on many fronts. Most importantly, it shows that the Saturday Market, for the papers under scrutiny, is 36% stronger than the Monday-Friday market. If the M-F sale is 8% below the average, then there are going to be days between Monday and Friday that could only be classes as “tragic”.    The really interesting figures are how well the ‘quality’ UK papers of The

Spam, Spam, Spam

On the subject of spam – here’s an interesting one. You can do plenty with the Google search bar other than your “normal search”. You can use search operators to get a different look at websites.  Here’s one you can do that’s fairly interesting. In the search bar key in the following Site:mysite.com But substitute ‘mysite.com’ for your own website. This then shows you web pages that Google has indexed. Now, if you are a keyword rich site (ecomm perhaps) you can go further, using the site operator again search for a keyword  (red widget in this example) Site:mysite.com  red

Irish Newspaper Circulation March 2012

Well, the party (or wake) is truly over. The gains some of the titles made when the NotW closed last July were well and truly wiped out this month with a full month figure for The Sun (on Sunday). The Sun (on Sunday) fell back to 81,000 from its maiden figure of 109,000, which was to be expected. But the buyers have to come from somewhere and they were kindly donated by Sunday Mirror, The Daily Star on Sunday and The People – the very papers that made gains at the NotW closure – to be biblical about it –

European Internet Statistics

European Internet Statistics for February by Comscore show that Ireland still trails in terms of our internet penetration. Naturally the figures are based on sheer numbers, but even when compared to individual populations we are still laggards in European terms.   Actually, when compared to the same month last year, our usage has declined, as have many countries across Europe. A figure that leaps off the screen is Italy, who has increased its internet usage by 15% in the past 12 months. If the penetration is static, the hours are not increasing marginally over the year. 2012 2012 2011 2011 (000)

Daily Deal News

I came across some interesting updates regarding the daily deal industry. Not exactly all intertwined, but at least all to do with the growth in the daily deal arena. Firstly it’s now estimated that there are 482 of these sites in North America  alone and they have just been joined but a heavyweight in the form of Amazon. They recently launched AmazonLocal in response to the growth of Daily Deals. Amazon are no strangers to the market as they already have an investment in Living Social. Where they might have an automatic advantage is that Amazon has 144 million active

February 2012 Newspaper Circulations

The big story this month is what can only be described as The Sun’s (Sunday) maiden voyage.  And the launch fanfare was so great that it managed encouraged a euro out of a 109,000 punters pockets in its first week. Naturally there’s bound to be an element of ‘curtain twitching’ in the figure and next month will be a much better indication of its sale. The comparison is going to be drawn and it’s that the Sun Sunday (SS) is still 8,600 behind where the NoW was in February 2011. Interestingly, the other papers that muscled in on the NoW

Sunday Newspaper Circulation Circulations July Dec 2011

The Sunday ABC’s very much reflect the demise of the News of the World during the year with only some of the papers gaining on the back of the closure.  With that the Sunday market is down 114,000 copies year on year or 11%– which is still not equal to the sale of the NoW prior to its closure (124,000). The figures would suggest that the majority of NoW purchasers didn’t remain in the market after their Sunday paper closed. Personally, I’d suggest that the NoW was, in the majority of buying scenarios, a ‘secondary purchase’ and, once gone, the
